Advertising Photography is similar to the product and the commercial photography. But you could say that we help sell lifestyles, ideas and concepts, focusing more on creating emotions that help describe and sell the idea of the product. We normally have more control creatively, with a freedom to show how products, services, lifestyles, and ideas can be presented and sold photographically. Getting the photography right can certainly help getting your message understood.
Some clients know exactly what they want and all that is needed is to execute that idea for them. Though this is not as simple as it sounds, as the photographer you still need to show the texture and material and include all the product’s details. You must take care of the final shot by using all your skills with lighting the subject, whatever it might be. To help the client strengthen their brand with the right advertising photo, you must also keep in mind the need to explore and find out what is of the best benefit for their particular business.
Then on the other hand, there are others who have no idea at all of what they want. Then you are there guiding them through the shoot and maybe also problem solving with reflective surfaces. Sweetly finessing a shot with light to emphasise the curves, shape and depth of the product, interacting with it and the light sources to create those compelling images that your clients will remember you for.
In general, photographing reflective surfaces are quite challenging and sometimes can become frustrating, as the surfaces of the product being photographed can act as a mirror. The last thing an advertising photographer wants to see is his shape in the hero shot! This being the case, I still enjoy the task of overcoming the problem, and sometimes this might be accomplished by weird and wonderful ideas.
My style in Advertising Photography is pure, natural, simple and lucid.
